Residence Permit for Investment- Art. 90.º-A

The Investment Residence Permit (ARI) regime, in force since October 8, 2012, allows Nationals of Third Countries to obtain a temporary residence permit for investment activity with the exemption of a residence visa to enter Portugal. The beneficiary of ARI has the possibility of:

  • Enter Portugal with exemption from residence visa
  • Reside and work in Portugal, and must at least stay in Portugal for a period not to be 7 days in the first year and not less than 14 days in subsequent years;
  • Circulate through the Schengen Area, without the need for a visa
  • Benefit from family reunification;
  • Request the granting of a Permanent Residence Permit under the Aliens Law (Law No.º 23/2007, of July 4, in its current wording

Required Documents
The application for the granting of a residence permit is made by appointment (or through an electronic platform – in the implementation phase for residence visa holders), it is delivered in person with its own form signed by the applicant or his legal representative. It can be presented at any AIMA Store, which can refer it, after instruction and decision, to the services of the applicant’s area of residence.
It must be accompanied by:

  • Two identical photographs, pass type, in color and smooth background, updated and with good identification conditions (if the scheduling is made at AIMA Stores in Odivelas or Aveiro);
  • Valid passport
  • Criminal Record of the country of the nationality of the person who applies or criminal record of the country where the citizen resided for more than a year, before residing in Portugal duly authenticated
  • Declaration, under commitment of honor, of the address of residence, stating under what terms you are residing in the indicated housing (e.g. owner, tenant, subtenant, usufructuary, borrower, among others
  • In situations where you live on site because you are an owner or usufructuary, you must present a property registration certificate or provide the respective access code to prove the right of ownership or the right of usufruct, or
  • In situations where you live on site as a tenant or tenant, among others, a statement from the landlord of the property or the housing entity, mentioning the legal situation underlying the right to use the property
  • Proof of registration in the tax administration
  • Proof of social security registration

When applicable, a declaration issued by the respective professional order on the verification of registration requirements or document proving that you are qualified to exercise the profession when it, in Portugal, is subject to special qualifications.
